WELCOME SAM BUTLER

We are excited to announce that Sam Butler has joined Horsfield Menzies as a Senior Associate in the Employment team. I managed to sit down and ask him some questions about his career to date and here’s what he had to say:

What’s your career journey been to date?

I began my legal career at the international law firm, DLA Piper, and was fortunate to work on large global deals as well as national and high profile litigation. I then spent 12 months in-house with University of Manchester legal team, largely assisting with the legal intricacies and complexity of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Having spent time in-house I moved to Thompson’s to develop my employee and trade union representation where I focussed on tribunal work.

Most recently I took up my first partnership role, leading the employment law team for Counterculture Partnership, a niche professional services firm advising in the cultural, creative and arts sectors.

What’s been your career highlight?

I have been lucky to work on some very high profile cases as a junior lawyer, including the tribunal claims following the collapse of Carillion PLC. However, I learnt the most from developing and growing the employment legal offer at Counterculture, working with incredible clients doing exciting work in the cultural and creative world.

What excites you about joining Horsfield Menzies?

I am really looking forward to developing my skills learning from the wider Horsfield Menzies team. It is rare to find such experience in a boutique environment and, as somebody who likes being part of a team, I know it will be a good fit.

What do you like to do when you’re not busy lawyering?

As you may have guessed from my work at Counterculture, I have a real passion for the creative arts, with a particular interest in theatre. I have also been involved in local politics for a number of years, and keep up with all things small “p” political when I can.

Like most men in their mid-30s I’m also having to find new ways to rekindle the fitness of my youth so you’ll find me running (slowly) or out on my bike at the weekend!
